sad rankings

I find this question being asked by many webmasters and site owners, Why my rankings are not as shown in webmaster tools when I actually do a query for that term? I would love to answer this question because it will be really interesting to dig little deeper in to this subject.

When you check your Google webmaster tools, you can see that it gives you list of terms where your pages have actually appeared in the search at some position for that particular term, say you saw a term that you have used in your blog post or at some point in your content that seemed to have brought your page up for a particular query at some position. Lets assume you saw your page appearing in position three for the term “Gold Mine” according to Google webmaster tools but when you actually do a search for “Gold Mine” from your PC there is a high chance that you may not find your page in the top three position, instead you might see it at some other position say like position 20 or 30 or sometimes its even hard to find your page appearing for that term.

So how could a low ranking page actually got in to position 3? Here is the answer. Google sorts out the results according to your geographic location from where you are actually search from and when a person does a search for a particular term from France may not see the same result as someone who does a search from Germany. Secondly search engines track down the pattern of your query, like we saw in the example your page appeared at number three for someone but not for you, the possible reason might be this person might have searched for other terms that relates to Gold Mine before, like “history of Monte Cristo”, “famous spots in monte cristo” and then followed by “Gold Mines”

In this kind of search that follows a pattern, search engines assume the mind set of the person who does a search and it automatically assumes that this person might be looking for a page which has details of Gold Mines that has something to do with “Monte Cristo” due to the nature of searches he made previously and your page which ranked on position three might have had some terms that relates to “Monte Cristo” so under these circumstances search engines alters its rankings to give more appropriate results to users, So your rankings which you saw at webmaster tools may most probably be a temporary ranking for a user who followed some pattern of search.

I know its kind of disappointing :( but be happy that you know some truth about search engines :D
