Why Are External Links Important For Your Site

I had a guy called Williams from United States, Ohio mail me. Why are external links important for your site? Is it not enough if you have a site with good amount of information?

Question is really basic I know but its not a bad question as you think it might be. I would say its a really good question and I feel happy he asked it.

First thing to know is majority of the people who use search engines like Google are looking for information, secondly majority of these people don’t know exactly where to search for the information they are looking for, which site they want to go to get the information they need. So these people tend to use search engines and in majority of the cases search engines bring you most accurate results possible for your query. They use many sophisticated metrics in their algorithm to bring the best possible results to their users.

So that’s basic. Next thing you have to know is search engines have to do the job of filtering out crappy sites from the good ones, because crappy sites has crappy contents which users of search engines don’t want to look at. So they are forced to rank websites based on certain parameters in their algorithm. One the biggest factor that determines where your pages appear in users search is the links that are pointing to your pages, links can either come from your own site or it may come from external source. But search engines give more priority to links that comes from an external source and there are number of factors involved that determines the quality of the links coming from an external source but let us not look deep in to it.

Another reason why external links are important is that, only through external links that points to your site that search engines finds your site and indexes your pages to their database.

External links can also be considered as a kind of advertisement to your site, when people find your links in other sites there are chance that people will click on it and end up in your site. So external links do play a part in driving your traffic as well.
