I had this question being asked by couple of people over email today, they want me to shed a little more light on this Golden Triangle factor on Google search results, of course I am sure many of you may not be aware of this Golden triangle thing, I am sure even some people who claim themselves to be SEO professionals don’t know whether there is such a thing in SEO. But whatever may be the case with you I think its important that you have to know about this particular study.
Golden triangle thing emerged out of study conducted by Didit, Enquiro and Eyetools. I am not sure about their official websites, perhaps you can try to Google it if you are interested in knowing more about them. They did an eye-tracking study back in 2005 and the study was done with nearly 50 people I believe, these people were made to do Google search on their computers and they have observed the pattern of their eyes, where they look first in search results and the result of this study has what made the outcome of this concept called “Golden Triangle” you can look at the picture below to get the idea.
As you can see in the picture above people’s eyes moves in a pattern that looks similar to a triangle, with majority of their attention grabed towards organic search results and rest towards the PPC or paid advertisements for the keywords you search for.
It is said that your results in the first three position gets 100% attention from the search engine users and the chances that people will see your listing drops by 10% for each results after the third.
It is also said 70% of the users don’t go beyond the first page, 90% of the users don’t go beyond page two and the rest 10% is uncertain, they may end up in any page they like and you cannot really make an conclusion about them on where they will end their search.
So how this study is going to help you? well I would say this will help you to a great extent considering the fact that chances of users checking your result in page one which is in position 9 or 10 which gets only 20% to 30% to the users, occupying the first or second position in page two where you can get 100% visibility with 30% of the users will prove to get you more click through and hits for your results, it doesn’t mean you can opt for the position one or two in page two, its just a matter of fact that its a better position to be than to be in the last place of page one.
