Are Writing Meta Descriptions Waste Of Time Now?

Meta Description
When you search for the information you are looking for in search engines like Google, Yahoo And Bing and also some other search engines. What you normally find is that link to the page then followed by a small snippet that describes about what the page has. Most webmasters write their own custom meta descriptions for each page to be shown up for the particular page in search results for their sites.

But the latest move from search engines regarding meta descriptions is surprising, you need to know that search engines now may or may not use the descriptions you have provided in the meta description area and it may choose to display its own description for your links.

Where Might These Descriptions Come From?:

We find that if your site is listed in directories like Yahoo and DMOZ and if search engines find the description on those listing to be more related to a person who does the search, then it might grab the description from those directories and display it for your listing.

Another possibility is search engines take a random text from your page itself and display it to the users. We are not yet sure on what basis and how search engines grab related texts from your pages but we do know it does a fairly good job in creating its own.

So Does That Mean You Don’t Need To Write Custom Meta Descriptions?
I would say NO! well I might ridiculous but really, just know that if you can write a effective meta description on what your page actually contains there is still more chance that search engines will choose to show your own description under your listing over automated one. So do not leave off your efforts in writing precise and more informative descriptions for your pages.

How Can You Write More Precise Meta Descriptions For Your Search Results?

Just try to use Google analytics to find out what terms people use to find your pages and what descriptions your listings hold on those results. If you find the descriptions to be a auto generated one and not to your satisfaction then you might well write a more relevant meta description that will match with the search query.
