Importance Of Keywords In Google Webmaster Tools

| January 8, 2010 | Comments (11)

If you are an user of Google webmaster tools, you might have noticed that as soon as you get in your account you will notice a section called keywords to the right of your dashboard showing you the list of top five keywords which occurs on your site and it would also show you its significance level. If you haven’t noticed it before just make sure you do now. Also if you are not using Google webmaster tools I would highly recommend you to try using it. You don’t have to pay anything for it and its a free tool and it can be extremely helpful when used rightly.

So coming back to the topic, so how these list of keywords can help you? In my opinion these list of keywords can help you in a great way and I will point out how in the later part of this article so just continue reading.

1. Keywords List Can Indicate Whether Your Site Is heading Towards Right Direction:

These list of keywords can help you judge whether your site is heading in a direction which you want your site to go, just check whether those top 20 keywords are the right keywords which are relevant to your site’s niche and those are the keywords which you want to rank for in search engines.

2. Google Judges Your Site’s Niche And Content Based On The Top 20 Keywords:

When search engines like Google looks in to your website, it judges your content based on the top significant keywords that occurs on your site, and also they rank you high for the terms that are more related those top keywords.

3. Increase The Density Of Keywords You Want To Focus On Primarily:
When you find the keywords which you want to focus on primarily is not on the top 5 or at least top 10 list then you need to work hard to make sure to increase the occurrences of those primary keywords in your site’s content, I am not telling that you need to stuff your keywords wherever possible that will reduce the quality of your site from user’s point of view, you can write more contents based on those keywords instead of stuffing your keyword in to couple of articles or in your homepage description, that’s a bad practice to do in the first place.

4. Try To Build Long Tailed Keywords Based On Top Keywords:
When you find all those keywords are relevant to your site, then you can try to build long tailed keywords based on it and write contents on those long tailed keywords. For example when I find my top top 5 keywords according to Google webmaster tools to be “wordpress” “optimize” “seo” “search” “engines” then I can use all those keywords and come up with a long tailed keyword like “how to optimize your wordpress blog for seo” or “optimize wordpress for search engines” These keywords can be extremely helpful when you use them rightly. Using Google webmaster tools will not boost your rankings in search engines but you can use the datas they provide you and use it to your advantage, that’s the whole point in this article.

I never really used Webmaster Tool to analyze my site like that. I used to use it just so I can check if Google has penalized my site for anything.

      Hi Kai Lo,

Webmaster tools can be really helpful not only to know whether your site has been penalized or not, but it does give you a whole lot of other information about your site which can be really useful for you to know the status of your site. for example webmaster tools does tell you whether bots can crawl all your pages or is it facing any problem anywhere which you might not notice otherwise.

    Hi Chakkravarthi,

I am fairly new to the SEO world. I have a website that I have finally started promoting and learning new stuff everyday. I have a question for you. Within the google webmaster, is the position of the keywords a direct correlation for what a particular website would rank for? Using your example, where the webmaster is showing 1. WordPress 2. SEO 3. Blog 4. Tips 5. Search . Will the website have a higher probability of ranking high for the word SEO WordPress since they have taken the position of one and two within the webmaster?

    • seoguy

      Hi ray singh,

No! webmaster tools is just a tool that will help you to see how Google views your website. The position of keywords in the webmaster tools just tells you what are the keywords that occur the most within your website or blog. It doesn’t have anything to do with your rankings. You need to build links and write quality contents in order to rank high in search engines.

  • http://www.seofreelance.biz posicionamiento web

Hey there, i was looking for info about how to make some keywords to have more impact on the relevance google’s algo takes for any of them and this post was really useful, thanks for sharing :)

What I don’t understand too weel is what Google webmasters tool help says about it: “The Keywords list will sometimes exclude words that Google has determined to be boilerplate text or common words. The actual excluded words vary from site to site.”

Does it mean the list we see at webm tools is already filtered out without those keys or not? Is there a way to impact on that “black” list?

Ty in advance for any help :D
