Does .gov & .edu Links Carry Special Value In Terms Of SEO?

This is one of the hot topics of SEO, many link builders and seo professionals charge more money for building links on sites with .gov and .edu, so does these links carry special value in terms of search engine optimization? does search engines like Google, Bing & Yahoo give more value to these links than links from .com and .net?

Well this question was once asked to Matt Cutts who is a well known staff of Google who clarifies doubts and shares tips to webmasters around the world. According to him these links do no carry any special value like its assumed to be by many webmasters, but from my view point considering the fact that not everyone can register for a .gov or .edu domain names as it requires special permissions, these links must carry some special value, they might even carry more PR.

From the experience of many webmasters and SEO professionals these links do give a slight advantage and lift the position of your site in search rankings for certain. So why does Google has to deny the fact that it does when it was asked so?

Reason may be that people may start to spam these sites which might potentially nullify and abuse a metric system they use in their algorithm to rank web pages possibly. But whether it carries some weight or whether it is just an illusion of many webmasters to believe it that way, getting a backlink from a well recognized sites and sites that carry some authority does have more value over other low quality links that might not do you any good.

My suggestion would be don’t worry too much about building links in these domains, build links that will really benefit you rather than searching and wasting your time in looking for these domains and building links on them.

I believe that links from .gov and .edu domains are valuable in regards to trustrank and not PageRank. These sites will not pass more or less link juice then any other type of dofollow link. However, I believe that a link from these sites even if it is nofollow can greatly increase trustrank. This trustrank results from the restrictions placed on domains with these extensions.
