duplicate content
There has been lots of speculations about duplicate contents recently, I just thought it would be useful for many if I throw some light on the whole issue, to enlighten webmasters a little on this context. Here are some five truths that you may want to know being a webmaster.

1. Why Search Engines Hate Duplicate Content?

Its really obvious that search engines don’t want to display pages with same information over and over again to its users and secondly they don’t want to waste their resources on indexing pages with same contents. That’s pretty much it on why search engines don’t want duplicate content.

2. Will Search Engines Penalize You For Hosting Duplicate Content On You Site?

Answer would be not really, search engines don’t usually penalize you for hosting duplicate content but when you host duplicate content there is a chance that your pages may not be included in the index or it may be included in the supplementary index which is not something that search engines display to its users under normal circumstances.

3. When you should and when you shouldn’t worry about duplicate content?

If you build a site entirely based on duplicate content then you should probably worry about search engines penalizing your site, because they do not want such sites that is entirely using duplicate content, but some sites do survive for a longer period though they host majority of duplicate contents but this is a special case. There is more possibility that search engines will sooner or later find that you are hosting duplicate content and penalize you.

You don’t need to worry when you got more number of original contents in your blog and you are adding some contents taken out of some external source to educate your readers in some way or get them informed of some information. Search engines will not penalize these sites.

4. Duplicate Content In Your Own Site

There are some people who do this mistake, they fail to set their url preference like do they want people to go to pages with “www url or non www url” under this circumstance search engines might think both urls are leading to different sites and it thinks that one site is a duplicate of the other and penalize your url and may affect your rankings for a long time till it develops some trust.

Also there is another possibility that you may keep posting similar articles in your site that look like a copy of each other so there is a chance that search engines will think that your site doesn’t have quality contents and posting same article again and again. You may get penalized like that, some people even have a habit to open a new subdomain and post the articles from their main domain, search engines will still find those contents as duplicates.

5. How Can You Avoid Duplicate Content?

Best way to avoid duplicate content is to write your own articles in your own words rather than taking someone else’s article and posting under your site. You can although use other people’s articles to get an idea on what to write and highlight your view on the article and make a new story that search engines and visitors will find unique to your site.
