Researching for the right keywords should be the primary task before you even decide with the starting a website or blog. Here are some of the key points that you should keep in mind while doing a research for keywords.

1. Use Google Keyword Tool

First and most important thing to remember is using the right keyword tool for doing research for your keywords. 2. Try To Create Three Groups Of Keywords

When I do research for keywords, I make sure to categorize my keywords in to three groups, First group will have more competitive keywords, second group will have moderately competitive terms and followed by less competitive terms. This way you will know what are the keywords you are going to work for a longer period of time and terms which you want to spend moderate to little amount of time.

3. Go For Long Tailed Keywords

Another thing I focus on is looking for long tailed keywords, over keywords which are one or two words long because, long tailed keywords gets more targeted visitors plus, long tailed keywords converts better on the long run over ranking for short terms.

4. Check For Competition

Check how much competitive a particular term is when you are doing your research, one of things which gives you an rough idea on competition is by looking at the advertisers competition level in Google keywords tool.

5. Focus on Less competitive keywords on large numbers

You not only have to go for more competitive terms, but make sure you are only focusing on less number of more competitive terms and more number of less competitive terms that way you will start to see a steady progress in your site on the long run, plus when more competitive terms fail to bring you traffic these large number of less competitive terms where you rank high will still back you up in tough times.
