I would say choosing the right keyword is the first step to your site’s success, most people don’t even do a research for keywords and others do some search for keywords in Google keyword tool but they will be driven out by the number of searches their term gets and blindly choose the keywords which has the impressive numbers. Unfortunately choosing a keyword just because it gets more searches is not the right way to go about it. You need analyze the competition for your keywords too. Otherwise you will be wasting your time with a highly competitive keyword. Here are some tips on how you can analyze your competition for keywords.
1. Look In To Advertiser’s Competition:
When you do a search in Google keyword tool, there is an indication on advertiser’s competition for that term, mostly when there is a huge demand from advertiser’s for a particular term, more is the probability that its a highly competitive keyword. But you cannot blindly assume it that way though but it gives you a rough idea.
2. Search In Google:
When you choose a keyword, just do a search in Google with that term and look at the number of results it brings in. when the numbers are big it only indicates that it might be a highly competitive keyword to deal with.
3. Do a search With Quotes:
you can also do a search with quotes, this gives more accurate results on number of pages which actually has the key term you want to focus up on. I would say if you see the numbers reduce drastically from ordinary search to this search in Google then there is a possibility that the keyword may not be that competitive than you might have actually thought it would be.
4. Make A Power Search:
There are ways in Google where you can make your search more powerful. For example if you just want to see how many pages actually use your keyword in their title, then you can search in Google like
intitle: YOURKEYWORD
To look how many pages actually use your keyword in their content then search like
intext: YOURKEYWORD
To search only for how many pages which has inbound links with the targeted keyword make a search like.
inanchor: YOURKEYWORD
These searches will also give you some idea on how competitive is your keyword actually is.
5. Use Niche Watch Tool:
Niche watch tool can be an excellent indicator oh how competitive your keyword and your niche can be. This is a free tool and this is something I would highly recommend to anyone who want to take his keyword analysis more seriously.
