Understanding Wordpress Dashboard

by seoguy on November 16, 2009

As soon as you login to your wordpress account first thing as an administrator of the blog you will notice you will get around eight panels ( current wordpress displays eight panels) and they are as follows.

1. Right Now

2. Recent Comments

3. Incoming Links

4. Plugins

5. Quickpress

6. Recent Drafts

7. Wordpress Development Blog

8. Other Wordpress News

Now we will look in to what details does each panel provides us with.

1. Right Now:
right now wordpress dashboard
Right now panel as you can see it gives you information on how many posts you have made so far and how many pages are created, how many tags you have used for your posts, how many comments are made on your posts, how many comments are live and how many comments are in spam queue and how many comments are blocked by akismet if you have enabled akismet of course and details on what template you are using for your blog right now and how many widgets are that templates using. So these informations are quite useful in giving you an over all idea on how the blog is performing.

2. Recent Comments:

You can guess that from the very name that it gives you details about the latest comments made on your blog entries and I am not going to post any screen shot for that as it doesn’t involve much of explanation.

3. Incoming Links:
incoming links wordpress
This one can be quite useful because once your blog becomes active and when people link to you on other blogs which appear in Google blog search those links will be displayed here, it gives you a rough idea on who are all linking back to you, helps you to form some bond of friendship with other bloggers, if possible you can make a post which appears on their blog and link back to them, its a way to show your gratitude, but if you so far don’t have any incoming links pointing to you don’t worry about it, you will get them as your blog gets older.

4. Plugins:
plugins wordpress

Don’t be misunderstood that it shows the list of plugins that you have installed on your blog, its not that, by default wordpress will show you some of the random plugins that you can use it on your blog, so the name of the plugins shown there are random ones and not the ones actually installed on your blog.

5. quickpress:

quickpress wordpress
If you have been to forums then you must have noticed that some forums do have an option like quick post or quick reply, this one is something similar to that, you won’t get much editing option using this quick press option to post articles, but in case you are on a hurry and you want to make some announcement on a short period of time then this quickpress option can be of great help. personally I don’t use this option to post my articles but if you want to try this one out you can give it a shot.

6: Recent Drafts:

recent drafts wordpress
Recent drafts helps you to display some of the posts that are unfinished by you and auto saved by the system and I really found it useful sometimes when your power goes off or something happens that your computer goes off, you don’t have to worry that your post is lost, wordpress automatically saves whatever you type and move it to drafts.

7. Wordpress Development Blog:

This panel shows you the latest information on wordpress develpoment, what are the bug fixes and what are the updates made on actual wordpress script, so it will be quite helpful if you want to know the live news on wordpress updates.

8. Other Wordpress News:

You will get the latest blog entries on wordpress here, nothing special but if you want to know what’s going on in wordpress then this is the right place to look at and interact.
