Exploring Writing Settings In WordPress

Seriously not bloggers just get in here and do some changes because your wordpress functions normally without doing some changes to these default settings however its good that you get to know what this writing settings can do for you as a blogger.

As soon as you get in to writing options under settings in your admin panel you will come across a screen similar to the one shown below.

Now we will go through each section of it separately to understand its functions more clearly.

At the top of this panel you could see four functions.

1. Size of the post box

2. Formatting

3. Default post category

4. Default link category

Size of the post box:
It refers to the size of the post box that you use to write your contents in wordpress, normally I find 10 lines is more that enough but its your choice totally, you can set the value to up to 100 lines, if you want a more spacious post box to write your articles.

Formatting:
Formatting comes with two check box options, one option lets you to change certain emoticon values to graphics, so when you type in certain values like :) , :( those will be changed to some attractive looking smiley, I normally turn this on because I like smileys but if you don’t want any smileys to be displayed on your posts or sometimes you find it disturbing you can un check this option.

Second option is “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” what does it mean is simple,in normal HTML document we don’t need to give the closing tags for some functions and its perfectly ok but XHTML is bit strict with these closing tags, so choosing this option makes the codes look more perfect but does it do any good for SEO? may be if it does then it may influence like .000000001% or even less again its up to you.

Default Post Category:
Sometimes it happens that you may be in a hurry that you forget to mention which category a particular post must go to, so under such circumstances posts will reach to the default category which you choose here.

Default Link Category:
Same goes here, you can create your own link category under links option and you can choose which link category should show up as well by in the home page.

Remote publishing:
enable xml rpc Exploring Writing Settings In Wordpress

I normally set this to on but by default its set to off so what does this option do? sometimes you may want to use third party publishing tools on your blogs so if this option is turned off as it is turned off by default you won’t be able to use those tools on your blog but don’t be worried you can set this to on. I am not digging deep in to this because you won’t need this in most cases but sometimes you may want to use such tools to post simultaneously on multiple blogs so if you want to use such services turn it on otherwise leave it off no problem.

Post Via e-mail:
This option sounds little interesting is it not? it does but mostly I won’t prefer using this service but if you want you can enable this so what happens? you can set up an e-mail account which definitely needs to be secret with your hosting provider, services like gmail or hotmail won’t work because they don’t have pop3 support, after your e-mail is set up you can enter the details of that e-mail here, so when someone or even yourself send an email to that id, your mail will be turned to post and published, I think wordpress gives us this option because there are times when we tend to find some interesting e-mails which we might want to share it with our blog visitors so it makes the work of a blogger easier, you just forward the mail to this id and it will be automatically published in your blog.

Update Services:
If you are not aware of pinging services then you should know about this, update services helps you to ping your posts to different search engines, just to let them know that you have made a new post in your blog so its time to visit your blog and index those pages, some people claim that pinging services don’t work anymore but personally I tested it and I can really say it does alert some search engine spiders so I don’t think pinging is dead.
