Why You Should Avoid Blogrolls In Your Blogs

blogroll21 Why You Should Avoid Blogrolls In Your Blogs
When I started with my SEO career that is around three years from now, I see a lot of people in the webmaster forums, even people who are SEO professionals exchange links within themselves and mostly blog owners do a link exchange by adding a link in the blogroll that will appear all over your blog, back then link in the footer, sidebar areas carried some values.

But you cannot escape from the eyes of search engines for long, Google and other search engines soon found out that many bloggers are misusing their blogroll space and they started to give less importance to two way link exchanges and then people started to follow three way link exchange, its something like for example you hold two blogs called “A” and “B” for example and then a third person owns a blog called “C” and the third person approaches you and asks you for a link exchange and he promises to add your link to blog “A” in his blog “C” and in return you can tell him that instead of adding your link to blog “A” You promise him that you will add his link to blog “C” in blog “B” and blog “A” will have a link pointing to blog “B” that way search engines won’t find out that we are exchanging links.

Again this never lasted for a long time atlast search engines decided to give the least importance to entire sitewide links, now even if you do a three way link exchange it will prove to be of no use in bringing your ranks up in search engines, as the links are not surrounded by supporting texts in most of the cases and even if you add appropriate texts it will not help in any major way to your SEO campaign so its better to drop the idea of having a blogroll in your sidebar as it may not prove to be of any help to you and your search engine rankings.

I like having blogroll on my site because these are sites I like to go to often and make comments. So I use it as a way of navigating to these sites…and I feel like I’m promoting to my users these sites that I like. Are there strikes against me for having a blogroll?

lol not really as long as you got quality sites pointing from yours in the blogroll it won’t affect your rankings really.

I just want to let know people who do link exchange in their blogroll, many assume that link in the blog roll is valued high which is not the case anymore and I just want to address that. I myself have a blog roll in this blog pointing to other sites and I don’t think they affected the way search engines see my site. :)

I just wanted to stress the point that it carries no or very less weight when it comes to SEO that’s it.

A lot of search engines, like you said, do not particularly like this link structure because it seems unnatural. Although you may actually all have each other on each others blogroll, it’s best to keep your links (if you use them) to a separate page.

The reason, from what I understand, is that you’re passing off links on every one of your pages, leaking PR instead of just using 1 page.
