Importance Of Meta Descriptions In WordPress Blog For SEO

| November 20, 2009 | Comments (2)

We have already seen how you can effectively optimize your blog post and page titles in your wordpress blog and we have also seen its importance in your search rankings, second in the list after title which plays an important in your search rankings is your description of a particular blog page.

It may not have too much influence over your rankings like the title tags but it does have an influence over your click through rates or CTR to be short, most people like to the short description to know what information that a particular page has got to offer them, lets just do a random case study so that you will know the importance of meta descriptions in your pages. Next, is getting good permanent link building to increase your site ranking in Google and other top search engines.

Lets do a search in Google for the term “How to date a girl” and analyze some of the results.

Here is the top three result which Google brought up me with.

results on how to date a girl

Well frankly none in the top three has really made any effort or took time to optimize their meta description properly, though these people rank high on a competitive term I really doubt they will get the full juice for the rankings they are in at the moment.

Just look at the first result, I am little happy that he has at least made some effort to exploit the meta description area and added some key phrases that randomly came to his mind when he wrote that article but if you just look at the results of other two its really disappointing.

In fact they have never touched the meta description section while they were creating their contents and we can clearly see that in the result page for that particular page. If you do not make use of the meta description then search engines randomly select some phrases from the actual document and put them in the description area, Google says it does a fairly good job in automating the whole process but really we can see its not so true and nothing compares to a good manually written meta description that attracts people to click through your links.

I just moved to the second page to actually come across a page that has got a good description about what the page has to offer.

It seems eHow does a fairly good job in exploiting the meta description area, just know that though their page ranks on the second page for this particular query there is a high chance that people will click through this link once they come across this page and the reason is their description on what the page has to offer is crisp and clear and they stayed with the word limits correctly.

Just know that its true that title plays a vital role in making people to click through your links but in order to get the maximum results and stand out of the crowd you need to focus on things which your competitors fail to do. You might spend hours on writing a valuable article of 1500 words but really how long could it take for you to write a meta description that will make your pages look neat on search engines, that will help you to get more click through on a long run? It doesn’t take me more than a minute to write a meaningful meta description so just don’t be lazy to write a meaningful meta description to your blog posts and pages and in the next article we will see how to optimize and add meta descriptions to your blog posts and pages for SEO.

I admit their important. But I don’t think they still give that much weight to that factor anymore compared to the past few years.
