How To Add Meta Descriptions To Your WordPress Blog For SEO
Previously we have seen the Importance Of Meta Descriptions In WordPress Blog For SEO. Now we will actually see how we can really add meta description to our blog posts so that they look good in our search results and also help us to stand out of the crowd in the search results.
Frankly I will not be surprised in the future to see Google considering pages with clear meta descriptions to the top in their algorithm, right now its not a big factor but it does influence your click through rate but as the competition gets more and more intense Google might use this one as one of the parameters to check how much does a webmaster actually cares about his site and his contents. But don’t be much worried about it now but its just a probability that Google might take in to consideration in future.
Coming back to the topic, Lets make some “To do list so that we can go through each one step by step”
1. Adding descriptions to your categories
2. Adding meta descriptions to your Posts and pages
3. Adding meta description to your homepage
Adding Description To Your Categories:
Most of us tend to create categories for different sections of our blog but hardly few take time to add some meaningful description to the categories, I would say its a good practice to add some description for your categories that search engine might use. To add description to your categories click on categories option under posts in your admin control panel and add a brief description to each category.
Adding meta descriptions to your Posts and pages:
This is the main part where we need to add some brief description for each post and page which you want to appear in search engines. To accomplish this you you will need to install this called headspace, I already mentioned this plugin under optimizing your titles article.
Now we will see how you can add meta descriptions to your posts, once you have installed the plugin you will see a new section under the post editor like the one seen below in the picture.

you can see a column where you can enter a summary of 150 characters and you can also enter your meta title if you need but that’s totally optional and the limit is set to 150 characters because only the first 150 characters will be displayed in the search results so just make sure you stick with the limits to make your meta descriptions look crisp and clean to the users of search engine.
Adding meta description to your homepage:
We can again accomplish this by using headspace plugin, if you have installed it just get in to headspace under settings in your control panel look for the option called homepage.

You can enter the title you want for your blog, mostly titles use keywords but make it something that looks like a title don’t just add keywords and make it look weird and add a description about your blog, like what your blog offers for its readers and make sure you stick to the 150 characters limit. Tags section is not so important because search engines have stopped to look at tags now, so don’t waste your time on it, if you have some keywords in mind that might go with your blog’s niche you might add it because some small search engines like ask.com might still take the tags in to consideration.
