One of the difficult part when you decide up on starting a blog is choosing the right template, there are variety of templates out there from which you can choose from, some are available for free and some are paid, most people have this tendency that paid templates are better than free ones. But irrespective of what you want to decide up on there are things you might want to look at while choosing a blog template, you need to see whether a particular template not only suits your blog niche better but also you need to check will the template help you to rank better in search engines. You might think what does a blog template has to do with search engine rankings? well blog templates does play a significant role in where you rank, of course there are bunch of other factors that determines your rankings but still blog templates does play a role in those factors, so you cannot undermine the value of templates.

1. Look for a template which utilizes less number of graphic images:
Why you need to look for a template that does have less number of graphic images is that, when you have too many images in your templates it takes a longer time to load and it significantly reduces the blog speed which is not good for search engine spiders and also for your visitors, so look for a template that utilizes less graphic images, I don’t mean that template should not have any graphics in it but the graphic usage should be fair enough not too much so just stick to some template that stays with the limit.

2. Choose A Template That Uses Less Javascript:
Search engines are now becoming more efficient in crawling through javascripts but that doesn’t conclude you could stick to a template that uses a lots of javascript in its design, its better to avoid templates that uses javascript in its design, though search engines crawl javascripts its still a lot of work for spiders and it may sometime get your rankings down so avoid templates with lots of javascript in its design.

3. Avoid Flash Templates:
Some people have a lot of love towards flash templates and its normal because they are tempting, flash websites are treat to eyes but unfortunately not in the eyes of search engines, some people say flash templates loads faster and they reduce the image size and also improves the loading time of the site, I would say those reasons are lame, if you look for a better ranking blog in search engines then get your way out of flash designs, search engines are still in its infancy when it comes to crawling flash designed webpages.

4. Look for a Template That Uses External CSS:
Most templates nowadays uses CSS in its design and its a good practice, reason is it reduces the amount of code you put in to design elements, normally if you design a template using HTML to the max even to include some graphics in the design then amount of code you put in to a webpage will be huge and that is not good for your rankings in search engines, When you have an external CSS file that contributes to the design then it significantly reduces the amount of code in a webpage, making the codes look more cleaner and light, this will contribute to your rankings in search engine.

5. Choose A Template That Is Simple With Easy Navigational Features:
Over all its a good practice to choose a template that looks simple and decent which is easy for your visitors to access, when its easy for the visitors to access different sections of your blog then it automatically becomes easy for search engine spiders to access the different pages of your blog too, so they compliment each other, also people love simple webpages rather than a complicated one, if you doubt that look at our favorite webpage in the whole world www.google.com :)

Hey Chakkravarthi, Congratulations on such an in depth blog – I would definitely recommend this to anyone getting started in SEO or WordPress. I find the simplest blogs are the ones which get best rankings. Sometimes I find that when the blog becomes overcomplicated with too many plugins and too much dynamic stuff, the rankings aren’t as good. Im not sure of this for fact but its what I’ve noticed…

      Hi there,

Thank you.. I really appreciate your observation, its true that simple themes most of the times rank higher in search engines. Reason is simple, search engines like simple webpages and search bots find it easy and spend less time in finding your actual content.

Also simple sites loads a lot faster than sites with complicated sites and design. Users like sites which loads fast so search engines kind of give preference to simple webpages while ranking.
